In english-speaken countries the german "Ultraleicht" aircraft class is called microlight class. A microlight aircraft is a class of aircraft that is classified as an air sports device in Germany. Certain weight limits apply to this class. The number of seats is also limited to 2 persons including the pilot. Construction regulations regulate and limit certain characteristics, These include that a total rescue system must be installed if registered in germany. The air sports device is subject to national regulations, so weight limits or the need to carry a rescue system may vary from state to state.
The microlight class is subject to national regulations, so weight limits or the carrying of a rescue system may differ in other countries. In some countries, the operation of an microlight is restricted, subject to special rules regarding equipment / flight planning / pilot license, and even prohibited. A harmonization of the rules would be desirable.
Maintenance and care can largely be carried out by the owner/pilot themselves, the lightweight design does not require heavy, fuel-guzzling engines, making this a relatively environmentally friendly and significantly quieter motorized air sport.
There are many different types of microlight aircraft. More information can be found on the homepage of the "Deutscher Ultraleichtflug Verband" (German Association for Microlight Flying ) - click here:
